NEC Student Liz Tobias Wins 1st Prize in Jazz Voices Competition

Vocalist Liz Tobias, a first-year jazz voice student in New England Conservatory’s Doctorate in Musical Arts program, earned first place in Europe’s Jazz Voices Competition in Lithuania in late November. She also won in the category of “Best Improvisation.” Tobias, from Adelaide, Australia, is being educated under the guidance of such jazz performers and educators as Dominique Eade, Ken Schaphorst, Fred Hersch, Cecil McBee, John McNeil, Miguel Zenon, Kate McGarry, Jerry Bergonzi and voice-technician Jeannette LoVetri. Tobias also holds a master’s degree from New England Conservatory, where she was chosen to work with Grammy award-winning singer Luciana Souza in 2013.
