Mary Halvorson Trio: Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12, 2008)
Halvorson made her debut on the Firehouse 12 label with this fiercely individual trio record featuring drummer Ches Smith and bassist John Hébert. Her dry tone and spasmodic improvisational style established her as one of the most original guitarists of her generation. “She seemed to know not only who she was as a musician,” the critic Nate Chinen writes of Halvorson in his book Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century, “but also precisely where she was headed.” A decade on and several albums later, Halvorson is still going strong.
