David Murray: 3D Family (Hat Hut, 1979)

David Murray’s stylistic range is as enormous as his tenor sound. 3D Family, recorded at the 1978 Willisau Jazz Festival, lets him fly with his swaggering rhythm and vibrato, and his alternately booming, squealing, and coarse tone. Bassist Johnny Mbizo Dyani and drummer Andrew Cyrille are simultaneously sensitive and game to follow Murray anywhere: through the freeform (“In Memory of Jomo Kenyatta”), the richly melodic (“Patricia,” “3D Family [for Walter P. Murray]”), and the subtly explorative (“Shout Song [for Cecil Taylor]”). In the process they cross-pollinate each context with the others.
