The fourth annual Jazz Connect Conference, held Jan. 14-15 at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City, was a huge success, attracting hundreds of attendees from all segments of the jazz world: artists, journalists, media executives, etc.
This year’s keynote speaker was the legendary vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, who detailed the many challenges she faced coming up in the music industry. Other speakers on the first conference day included musicians Dave Douglas, Jimmy Greene and Steven Bernstein, as well as Joel Harrison of the American Pianists Association.
The second annual Bruce Lundvall Visionary Award, named for the legendary record producer (who passed away last year), was given to presenter Brice Rosenbloom. And more than a dozen panel discussions, workshops and plenary sessions addressed a wide range of hot-button topics concerning the jazz world today, including marketing issues, social media, jazz in the mainstream media and more.
The documentary film Jaco, on the pioneering bassist Jaco Pastorius, was screened on day two of the conference, followed by a panel discussion focusing on his contributions to jazz.
Jazz Connect coincided with Winter Jazzfest, an event (created by Rosenbloom) that showcases dozens of jazz artists in numerous venues throughout the city. Watch this website for comprehensive coverage of Winter Jazzfest in the days to come.
