Roy Hargrove’s quintet gave an almost 90-minute continuous performance in the slightly bizarre setting of London’s Union Chapel in front of the pulpit with clouds of dry ice billowing across the stage. The band’s mixture of hard bop and modal pieces had a distinctly Miles Davis feel, however it is difficult to imagine “Miles” duplicating Hargrove’s soft vocals on “Never Let Me Go.”

Roy Hargrove Trumpet

Justin Robinson Tenor Sax

Sullivan Fortner Piano

Ameen Saleem Bass

Quincy Philips Drums
