On May 4, 2014 at Sculler’s Jazz Club, the JazzBoston organization honored longtime jazz impresario Fred Taylor with their Roy Haynes Award, which recognizes exception contributions to jazz and the jazz community. The legendary drummer himself was the first recipient of the award. The event was emceed by local radio hosts Eric Jackson (the second recipient of the award) and Ron Della Chiesa. The latter read a proclamation from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh declaring May 4 as Fred Taylor Day in the City of Boston.

The event also included musical performances by Amanda Carr, Graham Haynes (son of Roy Haynes), Grace Kelly, Rebecca Parris and others. Pauline Bilsky, executive director of Jazz Boston, presented Taylor with the award. Taylor celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of his iconic clubs, Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop this year, as well as his 25th year as Scullers entertainment director.
