On Saturday, October 19, at Hudson Studios on the far west side of Manhattan, the Jazz Foundation of America held its 28th annual Jazz Loft Party, which it billed as “A Night for the Soul.” For four hours on two stages, a dazzling variety of artists performed, including pianist Bertha Hope (paying homage to her late husband Elmo); New Orleans royalty Cyril Neville, Davell Crawford, and Zigaboo Modeliste (honoring the passing this year of Dr. John, Dave Bartholomew, and Art Neville); a 50th-anniversary tribute to the Miles Davis In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew sessions featuring Wallace Roney, Bernard Wright, John Scofield, Darryl Jones, and Lenny White; the Pharoah Sanders Quartet with Benito Gonzalez, Nat Reeves, and Marcus Gilmore, plus Ghanaian master drummer Okyerema Asante; and this year’s JFA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, 94-year-old drum legend Roy Haynes. As always, proceeds from the event went to support the Jazz Foundation’s efforts to help musicians in trouble. Photographer Udo Salters was there to catch all the action.

For 30 years, the Jazz Foundation of America has been keeping jazz, blues, roots, R&B, and soul music alive by helping the people who make it, providing housing assistance, pro bono medical care, emergency financial support, and performance opportunities to musicians in times of crisis. JFA now assists in more than 7,000 cases annually across the United States. Learn more about the Jazz Foundation by visiting its website
