Among those on the bill for the busiest day at the 65th Newport Jazz Festival: the Royal Bopsters with special guest Sheila Jordan; Ralph Peterson and the Messenger Legacy (paying tribute to Art Blakey); Joel Ross’ Good Vibes; the duo of Ravi Coltrane and David Virelles; Dee Dee Bridgewater; and Jenny Scheinman and Allison Miller’s Parlour Game, also featuring bassist Tony Scherr and pianist Carmen Staaf. Makaya McCraven got the Quad Stage grooving, while James Francies’ Flight went prog on the Harbor Stage. Artist-in-residence Herbie Hancock reappeared, this time in a trio with Christian McBride and Vinnie Colaiuta. Dianne Reeves sang with passion, the Ron Carter Trio played with timeless class, and Kamasi Washington closed out the day by helping everyone in earshot to get down with their bad selves.
