A Thursday monsoon made an inauspicious start for the 50th New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. But spirits weren’t dampened long, and the bands played on through the weekend—among them Crescent City stalwarts like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Foundations of Funk featuring Ivan Neville, George Porter, and Zigaboo Modeliste. Dr. Michael White (paying respects to Louis Cottrell and the Onward Brass Band), the James Carter Organ Trio, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and the James Andrews Band were also present and accounted for, while the families of Kidd Jordan and Ellis Marsalis gathered for musical tributes to those patriarchs of New Orleans jazz. Photographers Mark Robbins and Joel A. Siegel were on hand to capture the action; here’s just a little of what they brought back.
