The Cookers-the supergroup featuring Billy Harper (tenor saxophone), Donald Harrison (alto saxophone), David Weiss and Eddie Henderson (trumpets), Cecil McBee (bass), Billy Hart (drums) and Dave Kikoski subbing for the MIA George Cables on piano-came to Manhattan’s Iridium for two sets on April 19. JazzTimes‘ Jeff Tamarkin was at the early show and took the photographs in this spread.
The septet, which has released three acclaimed albums and plans a fourth this year, performed four original numbers-two by Harper, one by Hart and one by McBee-as well as a set-ending cover of Freddie Hubbard’s “The Core.” As an ensemble and in their solos, the band was consistently engaging and virtuosic.
