Luciana Souza, the versatile Brazilian-born vocalist who combines jazz with elements of samba, bossa nova and other genres, performed a stunning set at Joe’s Pub in New York City on the night of Sept. 12, 2012. Accompanied by guitarist Romero Lubambo, with whom she has worked often over the past couple of decades, plus double bassist Scott Colley and drummer Clarence Penn, Souza largely focused on songs from her two recent, simultaneously released albums, Duos III and The Book of Chet. As their titles imply, the former consists of duets on classic Brazilian songs (here she performed most backed only by Lubambo) and the latter is Souza’s tribute to the music of the late Chet Baker. Jeff Tamarkin photographed the show for JazzTimes.
