British vocalist and pianist Jamie Cullum made a rare small-room appearance at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club Sept. 29, showcasing music from his forthcoming album Interlude, his first for Blue Note Records.

Accompanied by a full big band that barely fit on the club’s modest-sized stage, Cullum displayed his many moods, crooning romantic standards, emoting the blues and, during an uptempo swinger, mounting the piano Jerry Lee Lewis style. He had the packed-to-capacity room in his thrall from the moment he aarived. JazzTimes‘ Jeff Tamarkin, who will write about Cullum for an upcoming issue of the magazine, was there with camera in hand.
