The Monterey Jazz Festival rolled out its 53rd edition, with a mix of legendary artists, New Orleans funk, and a tribute to the greatest music promoter of all time.
There were electric performances by Monterey newbies Trombone Shorty, and Benin vocalist Angelique Kidjo, who took their acts to the crowd literally. George Wein who founded the Newport Jazz Festival, the Newport Folk Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, recalled his storied career in a captivating interview by jazz writer Andrew Gilbert. Wein then performed a set with his All-Star band led by Howard Alden and Ken Peplowski.
Monterey cemented its place as one of the premier jazz festivals in the world.
