With more than 20 albums as a leader, alto saxophonist, flutist, and composer Steve Slagle celebrates the release of his latest: Ballads: Into the Heart of It. A veteran of bands led by everyone from Joe Lovano to Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Big Band, Slagle has been a force on the jazz scene since the mid-1970s. Tonight at Dizzy’s, he’s joined by longtime pal and trumpeter Randy Brecker: expect sophistication and soul! As WBGO’s Gary Walker opines, Slagle is “harmonically sophisticated, rhythmically aggressive, and sporting a biting tone—he’s one body, all soul.”
