John Scofield & Dave Holland at SFJAZZ Center

About
With a shared legacy of innovation and matchless musicality, two of the most influential instrumentalists in modern jazz, each rising to prominence through the bands of Miles Davis, come together for this intimate evening of duos.
John Scofield isn’t particularly known for seeking out duo projects. He became one of the era’s defining guitarists with his genius for assembling small combos, usually finely calibrated trios and muscular quartets. Bassist Dave Holland, on the other hand, has been documenting revelatory duo sessions for more than five decades, from landmark free improv encounters with guitarist Derek Bailey, bassist Barre Phillips and multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers to more recent recordings with Spanish flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichuela and pianist Kenny Barron, a fellow NEA Jazz Master. Holland and Scofield started working as a team a few years ago, but they already had some impressive history together, including Joe Henderson’s classic 1993 Miles Davis tribute, So Near, So Far (Musings For Miles), and the all-star quartet ScoLoHoFo with Joe Lovano and Al Foster, which toured widely after releasing 2003’s Oh! Supremely resourceful improvisers who share a love of deep grooves and subtle lyricism, Sco and Holland have both contributed original compositions to a duo repertoire that also encompasses a judicious selection of jazz standards.
