[INSiDE] THE JAZZ NOTE® Presents “Charles Mingus: A Jazz Icon of Contemporary Impact” Hosted by Ashley Kahn

Charles Mingus

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Online 1618830392
347 Bloomfield Ave
Montclair, NJ 07042 United States
(973) 744-2273

May 5, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

The legendary bassist, composer, and bandleader Charles Mingus was a fiercely independent, proudly African American force in music, a model for many generations of musicians, especially today. One way of appreciating his approach to jazz is to understand his particular way of balancing the two primary creative endeavors in jazz: composing and improvising. We are joined by Alex Terrier, alto saxophonist and member of the Mingus Big Band, to discuss Mingus through three powerful compositions. We will share videos and audio clips, and hear from Terrier plus Abraham Burton and Andy McKee, two other MBB members who teach at Jazz House Kids.

This event is partnered by JazzUp, the educational program for young players that is part of the annual French summer festival Jazz à Vienne, where both Kahn and Terrier teach. You can learn more about Jazz à Vienne here on YouTube:

Curated by Ted Chubb, trumpeter & JAZZ HOUSE Director of Cultural Programming.
