[iNSIDE] THE JAZZ NOTE Guest Artist Series: Jazz & Hip-Hop Hosted by Ashley Kahn

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Online 1607093347

Montclair, New Jersey 07042 United States

February 24, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EST

The confluence between these two musical styles has lasted for more than 30 years, even when many seek to keep them apart. Yet history shows a natural bond binds them, and many are the reasons: They are both branches on the tree of black American music; they both value authenticity and the power of the individual voice; they both prize improvisation, flow, swing/groove, and an acute sense of community and tradition. This presentation will look at the current connections between jazz and hip-hop, discuss why some seek to divide rather than unite the two, and the challenges and triumphs of this union. Curated by Ted Chubb, trumpeter & JAZZ HOUSE Director of Cultural Programming.
