2011 Detroit Jazz Festival

Jessica Sendra shares photos from free 4-day festival in Detroit

The Detroit Jazz Festival is an intense experience. Four main stages – plus a myriad of talk tents and kids areas and impromptu jam sessions – all pumping out incredible jazz from morning ’til night. You get your schedule on Friday night and plot out the plan of attack: “I’ll catch the first 20 minutes of Amina Figarova at the waterfront stage, then run down and see the end of Anat Cohen … stay for the beginning of Vinicius Cantuaria but leave in time to get a good seat to see Regina Carter. Can’t miss Christian McBride with the Eastern Michigan University Jazz Ensemble or the jazz talk with Luciana Souza and Romero Lubambo!”

It’s exhausting and exhilarating and it’s all completely free. If you’ve never made it to a Detroit Jazz Festival before, go ahead and block out Labor Day weekend 2012. I’ll look for you there!
