Video: Flautist, singer Lizzo accepts Ron Burgundy’s jazz flute challenge

One off-the-wall musical interlude from Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) in the 2004 comedy movie Anchorman turned the jazz flute into a strange kind of pop-culture punchline. Fifteen years later, the joke still has some resonance. Rapper, singer, and classically trained flautist Lizzo answered a Twitter challenge from Burgundy/Ferrell by releasing a shot-for-shot remake of that scene, complete with pyrotechnics.

In the video, released on Lizzo’s YouTube channel, the up-and-coming star relaxes in a jazz club with Este Haim of the pop band Haim. Lizzo takes the stage and launches into her funky, retro, and recently released single, “Juice.” The performance teases Lizzo’s album Cuz I Love You, due out Apr. 19.

The album’s title track, released last month, features a jazzy, gently swelling brass-section riff and has been compared to “Feeling Good,” Nina Simone’s sultry hit from 1965.
