Trumpeter & flugelhornist Jimmy Owens to Release Album of Monk Songs

Owens will receive his NEA Jazz Masters award in January

Trumpeter/flugelhornist Jimmy Owens will release The Monk Project on IPO Recordings on Jan. 3. A rare outing by the newly honored NEA Jazz Master as a leader, the album, featuring original arrangements of Thelonious Monk compositions, features Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, Marcus Strickland on tenor saxophone, Howard Johnson on tuba and baritone saxophone, Kenny Barron on piano, Kenny Davis on bass and Winard Harper on drums.

Owens will also perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York, Jan. 3-8.
