On June 20, 2011, the apparel company Patagonia released Patagonia Music Collective, Volume 3. On this album are previously unreleased tracks from various established and rising artists, such as Esperanza Spalding with “Life of a Ripple” and Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) with “When It All Comes Down”.
Lisa Pike, Patagonia’s director of environmental awareness and activism, said in a press release, “Working with artists to help fund critical work of grassroots environmental organizations is one creative approach that not only raises money but increases awareness and activism.”
Like with the previous two volumes, Patagonia Music Collectives help support grassroots environmental organizations, chosen by the artists, by donating all proceeds of the sales. The tracks are available for sale on iTunes, as individual songs or as the full album.
Another jazz artist, Medeski Martin & Wood also donated their track “Back and Forth.” In the press release Medeski Martin & Wood said, “We are honored to be part of the Patagonia Music Collective. At this point in time, there are so many important causes to get behind it can be overwhelming, which makes it even more essential that we remain clear and continue to do whatever we can to help wherever we can.” Medeski Martin & Wood chose for their proceeds to go towards Clean Ocean Action, an organization focusing on ending ocean pollution.
Spalding supports The Trust for Public Land, while Roumain’s proceeds go to The Good Earth Singers.
Other artists featured on the album include David Crosby & Graham Nash, Drive-By Truckers, Jake Shimabukuro, DeVotchKa, The Civil Wars, William Elliott Whitmore and Dolorean.
