Ramsey Embick Trio to Pay Tribute to Joe Zawinul

Portland concert will spotlight the late keyboardist's compositions

PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater in Portland, Ore., will present the Ramsey Embick Trio featuring Devin Phillips performing “In a Silent Way: The Music of Joe Zawinul,” on Thursday, September 29 at 8 p.m. All seats are $15.

The Portland-based trio features Embick on acoustic and electric piano, Damian Erskine on bass and Mark Griffith on drums. Erskine is the nephew of Peter Erskine, the longtime drummer and band mate of Joe Zawinul’s in Weather Report. Griffith is a current member of the Jaco Pastorius Tribute Big Band. In addition, Portland saxophonist Devin Phillips is set to play alongside Embick’s trio. The set list will feature the compositions of Zawinul during his time with Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and Weather Report. Among the compositions to be featured will be “In a Silent Way,” “A Remark You Made,” “Harlequin,” “Palladium,” “Country Preacher,” “Midnight Mood,” “Scotch & Soda,” “Jive Samba,” “Boogie-Woogie Waltz,” “Birdland” and “Mercy, Mercy.”
