The 49th annual Next Generation Jazz Festival, presented by the Monterey Jazz Festival, is now accepting applications for 2019. The festival showcases the country’s most promising soloists and ensembles—both vocal and instrumental—from middle school, high school, and college. They are chosen through recorded auditions reviewed by a panel of jazz educators. Top groups win cash awards and are invited to perform at the 2019 Monterey Jazz Festival, which takes place Sept. 20-22.
The coming year’s festival, which also includes clinics, workshops, jam sessions, auditions, and a big band competition, will be held at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, Calif., from April 5-7. The festival’s artists in residence will include drummer Allison Miller and bassist Derrick Hodge.
Applications are now being accepted through Jan. 12, 2019 from middle-school big bands, high-school vocal jazz ensembles, and college combos, as well as other types of groups.
Newly introduced to the festival are auditions for the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo, open to top high-school female jazz players throughout the United States. The winning combo will perform at the Jazz Education Network conference in Reno in January 2019, at the Next Generation Jazz Festival, and at the 62nd Monterey Jazz Festival.
Auditions for the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, which is featured at the Monterey Jazz Festival, will also be held through March 30.
All events at the Next Generation Jazz Festival are free and open to the public.
