New York Gets a New Venue, Jazz at Kitano

Toshiko Akiyoshi will open the club this weekend

New York has a new “jazz-infused” supper club, Jazz at Kitano, which opens this week adjacent to the Kitano New York hotel, 66 Park Avenue at East 38th Street. Promising a “dynamic dining experience” along with jazz, the club is described in a press release as sportin “an elegant environment, with warm mahogany walls, sumptuous banquettes, a ceiling of skylights and contemporary art will allow guests to fully appreciate the jazz experience while offering a fresh take on jazz venues that often illicit a darker tone.”

Scheduled to perform at the new venue thus far are established artists Fred Hersch, Barry Harris, George Cables anlong with relative newcomers Aaron Diehl, Gerald Clayton and Jeb Patton. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio will perform this Friday and Saturday, May 4-5, as the new venue’s first performers.

Jazz at Kitano will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails daily, in addition to musical performances.

Jaz at Kitano’s weekly line-ups will feature:

· Monday: Jazz Jam will invite musicians and vocalists to join in all evening, backed by the three-piece house band.

· Tuesday: Young Pianist Series will feature a new up-and-coming artist each month.

· Wednesday and Thursday: Top jazz entertainers ($10 cover charge + $15 minimum)

· Friday and Saturday: World-class marquee jazz acts ($25 cover charge + $15 minimum)

· Sunday: Jazz Brunch
