Pianist/composer Myra Melford has won the 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music. The Berkeley-based musician and educator received the honor and its $75,000 prize at a brunch ceremony yesterday at the Herb Alpert Foundation in Santa Monica, Calif. According to a press release, the award, now in its 18th year, recognizes the “past performance and future promise” of artists working in five disciplines: dance, film/video, music, theatre and visual arts.
