Greenwich Village’s much-beloved 55 Bar is among the many New York jazz venues whose continued existence is in danger from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this case, however, the bar’s regular cast of musicians is not taking it lying down. Instead, they have organized an 11-day benefit event that runs from September 22 to October 2.
The fundraiser comprises 11 nights of concerts to be held at the 55 Bar—and streaming each night on YouTube.
Performances happen each night at 9:30 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting the 102-year-old basement bar on Christopher Street, which faces a mountain of debt amassed over the 14 months that it was shuttered due to the lockdown. For those who are unable to attend performances either in-person or online, there is also a GoFundMe for the 55 Bar.
