The Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, an annual Kennedy Center event honoring women in jazz, will celebrate the life and career of vocalist and NEA Jazz Master Abbey Lincoln with a concert on May 4 at 8 p.m. in the Eisenhower Theater. Performers at this year’s festival include 2017 NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington.
In a press release sent to JazzTimes, Kennedy Center artist director for jazz Jason Moran states, “The Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival is a unique opportunity to honor Mary Lou’s significant contributions and artistry. I’m thrilled to continue this celebration of her as we give a powerful salute to another pioneer, the one and only Abbey Lincoln.”
