The ever-fascinating Makaya McCraven is letting fans who share that fascination glimpse the inner workings of his artistry. Universal Beings, a documentary of the making of his 2018 album of the same name, will be released July 31.
Directed by Mark Pallman, the documentary features behind-the-scenes footage of drummer/producer McCraven from his home in Chicago as well as on trips to California, London, and New York City to work on the album. At the same time it recounts the story of Makaya’s life, creative process, and musical collaborators (including Anna Butterss, Daniel Casimir, Dezron Douglas, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Nubya Garcia, Ashley Henry, Shabaka Hutchings, Josh Johnson, Carlos Niño, Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Tomeka Reid, Joel Ross, and Brandee Younger).
In addition to the documentary, McCraven has produced an extension to the album, Universal Beings E&F Sides, also for a July 31 release. E&F Sides features 14 newly edited tracks from the sessions for the original Universal Beings album.
Both projects will be released through International Anthem, McCraven’s recording label.
“Mak Attack,” the first single from Universal Beings E&F Sides project, and “Strangers In The City,” the first chapter from the documentary, are both currently available to stream on Apple Music.
