Kenny G Shares An Evening of Rhythm & Romance

Rhythm & Romance

Kenny G has a new DVD – An Evening of Rhythm and Romance – coming out October 6 on Eagle Rock Entertainment. There, we said it, with neither irony nor sarcasm. And, believe me, it wasn’t easy with a title like that. Why the soft gloves for the preferred punching bag of jazz purists during the last two decades? Well, given the abuse he’s taken from everyone from Pat Metheny to comedian Mike Birbiglia, we have decided to give the scratch-golfing icon of smooth jazz a pass. And say what you will about Mr. Gorelick, the man knows his audience, which it turns out is about 500 times bigger than either Joe Lovano’s or ours, give or take a few million. So listen and learn, jazz fans (and jazz magazine owners).

Lesson #1: Give the people what they want. The DVD, filmed in late 2008 at Humphrey’s By the Bay in San Diego, includes G-hits like “Songbird” and “Havana.”

Lesson #2: If it worked for someone else, it will work for you. Cover versions of Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World,” Average White Band’s “Pick Up the Pieces” and Consuelo Velazquez’s Latin classic “Besame Mucho” are scattered throughout the setlist.

Lesson #3: Give the people something extra. Buyers get three bonus tracks of Xmas songs and an interview session with the saxist.

Lesson #4: Keep up with modern technology. The DVD is also available in Blu-ray format.
