On Wednesday, Jan. 4, trumpeter/flugelhornist and 2012 NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens will discuss his latest recording, The Monk Project (IPO), at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The program will take place at 6:45 p.m. in the E.J. Noble classroom of JALC’s Irene Diamond Education Center. Owens is performing at JALC’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Jan. 3-8, and will be honored by the NEA at JALC’s Rose Theater on Jan. 10.
Owens’ new album, out on Tuesday, features a septet of heavy-hitters-Owens, Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Marcus Strickland (tenor sax), Howard Johnson (tuba, baritone saxophone), Kenny Barron (piano), Kenny Davis (bass), Winard Harper (drums)-taking on the leader’s inventive straight-ahead arrangements of mostly Monk staples. Among the tunes are “Well You Needn’t,” “Reflections,” “Epistrophy,” “Pannonica,” “Brilliant Corners” and “Blue Monk” (recast as a hard, slow shuffle that would make T-Bone Walker smile). Liner notes for the release were written by Robin D.G. Kelley, author of last year’s groundbreaking Monk bio Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original.
Owens’ sets begin at 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m., with 11:30 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday. Cover is $30-35; student tickets are available for $15 at select sets with valid student ID.
