92nd Street Y’s six-night festival, Jazz in July, will feature three dozen performers paying tribute to jazz legends like Jimmy Van Heusen, Benny Goodman and Chick Corea. The 29th annual summer festival, coordinated by artistic director Bill Charlap, takes place in New York City July 16-25.
The fest kicks off July 16 with a selection of Fats Waller tunes performed by pianist Rossano Sportiello, singer Carol Woods, clarinetist Anat Cohen and other musical talents. Celebrating the music of Jimmy van Heusen, July 17’s show highlights Harry Allen on tenor saxophone and the vocals of Dena DeRose and Freddy Cole. Trumpeter Brian Lynch, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Greene and alto saxophonist Jon Gordon join six other musicians to honor the legends of West Coast jazz July 18.
The second week of performances begins July 23 with a celebration of Chick Corea music featuring Chris Potter on tenor sax and Renee Rosnes on piano. The July 24 performance takes music lovers to the movies with Henry Mancini and Johnny Mandel scores performed by tenor saxophonist Houston Person alongside seven other musicians. The final performance on July 25 swings out the season with Benny Goodman classics featuring Warren Vaché, trumpet and flugelhorn; Ken Peplowski, clarinet; and Bucky Pizzarelli, guitar.
