Jazz at Lincoln Center will host a free listening session on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. dedicated to the new box set Coltrane ’58: The Prestige Recordings.
The Craft Recordings release features all 37 tracks John Coltrane recorded in 1958 as a leader or co-leader for the independent Prestige label. The collection captures Coltrane developing the signature improvisational style that journalist Ira Gitler famously dubbed “sheets of sound.”
The listening session will include a panel of experts and enthusiasts, such as Coltrane biographers Lewis Porter and Ashley Kahn. Panelists will play tracks from the historical collection and field questions from the audience.
Coltrane ’58 is available starting March 29 on digital formats and CD and April 26 on vinyl. For more information and the listening party’s event page, click here.
