Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana to Receive Kennedy Center Honors

Ceremony takes place Dec. 8, will be broadcast Dec. 29

Keyboardist, bandleader and composer Herbie Hancock is among five American artists named today to receive the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors. The other four recipients, also announced today by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, include opera singer Martina Arroyo; guitarist/songwriter Carlos Santana; pianist, singer and songwriter Billy Joel; and actress Shirley MacLaine.

The recipients will appear Sunday, December 8 in a celebration on the Kennedy Center Opera House stage. Seated with the President of the United States and Mrs. Obama, the Honorees will accept the thanks of their peers through performances and tributes.

The annual Honors Gala will be broadcast on CBS television on Dec. 29.
