Herbie Hancock will reunite with his groundbreaking 1970s Mwandishi band-Hancock on keyboards, Bennie Maupin (reeds), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), Buster Williams (bass) and Billy Hart (drums)-this Friday night, Oct. 24, at the Apollo Theater. The sextet will perform as part of the gala event “A Great Night in Harlem,” at which Hancock is to receive a lifetime achievement award.
The annual event will benefit the Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund. The evening, according to promotional materials, “will raise funds to assist elder jazz and blues musicians in crisis across the country, artists who have spent their lives making ours richer with their music.”
Also scheduled to appear are Quincy Jones, Verdine White, Bruce Willis, Jimmy and Tootie Heath, Questlove, Susan Tedeschi and others.
The Mwandishi lineup released three albums: Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant.
