Gregory Porter, the soulful crooner who helped make jazz a topic of conversation for mainstream music listeners, has a new podcast.
Gregory Porter – The Hang debuts August 8. Porter’s first guest is Jeff Goldblum (yes, that Jeff Goldblum). The actor has a side gig as a jazz pianist and once backed Porter on The Graham Norton Show. In fact, Goldblum says in the podcast, that appearance with Porter helped his band land a recording contract in 2018.
According to a teaser for Porter’s podcast, he says the idea behind the project is simple: “In each episode, I sit down and talk with a close friend of mine, we shoot the breeze about music, life, cars, food, wine, whatever.”
In total, The Hang will feature 10 episodes released over as many weeks. Future guests include singer Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics, filmmaker Amma Asante, and actress and filmmaker Charlotte Gainsbourg. Porter himself made a splash in 2010 with his debut album Water, which earned a Grammy nod. Two years later he released Be Good and the world started to take notice of his blend of jazz, gospel, and soul. 2013’s Liquid Spirit earned even more accolades as well as the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
