On October 3, 2010, jazz impresario and pianist George Wein celebrated his 85th birthday. This week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Wein is officially and musically celebrating that landmark with 6-night engagement with his Newport All-Stars, as well as various special guests sitting in each night. On October 19-24, Wein is performing two sets a night (7:30 pm and 9:30 pm) with his working group: Randy Brecker, trumpet; Lew Tabackin, saxophone; Howard Alden, guitar; Rufus Reid, bass; and Lewis Nash, drums. Among the special guests are: Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Rudresh Mahanthappa (alto saxophone), Miguel Zenón (saxophone), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) and Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar), with other surprise guests expected.
