Drummer Francisco Mela has been named the first Artistic Director of Minnesota’s Twin Cities Jazz Festival. The appointment was announced by Executive Director Steve Heckler at a fundraising event Sept. 29 that featured drummer Mela leading a quartet. Heckler also announced that the festival will receive a $125,000 grant from the Knight Foundation to support the 2015 and 2016 festivals. The Twin Cities Jazz Festival will celebrate its 17th year in 2015 (June 25-27).
