Eddie Marshall, 73, a fixture within the Bay Area jazz scene for decades, passed away Sept. 7 of a heart attack. The house drummer for the now-defunct San Francisco jazz club Keystone Korner, performed with a wide array of artists, including Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Stan Getz, Eddie Harris, Freddie Hubbard, Mel Martin, Jon Hendricks, Bobby McFerrin, Dexter Gordon and Bobby Hutcherson. He also played behind such pop and R&B artists as Dionne Warwick and the Pointer Sisters.
Originally from Springfield, Mass., Marshall started playing drums at age 14. He moved to New York in 1956, where he performed with pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, saxophonist Charlie Mariano and others. He also played the recorder, which he used when he composed. He went to the Bay Area in the late 1960s
As a leader, Marshall recorded the album Holy Mischief in 1999 and he led numerous bands of his own. He was the first recipient of SFJAZZ’s Beacon Award in 2000.
