The Second, bassist-composer Derrick Hodge’s sophomore album for Blue Note Records, which will be released on Aug. 26, features the two-time Grammy-winner playing all instruments and contributing vocals on all but four of the album’s 12 tracks. Drummer Mark Colenburg is featured on three tracks and trumpeter Keyon Harrold, trombonist Corey King and tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland make up the horn section on another.
“I wanted to create something that exposed myself artistically, with a heartbeat, for the people,” Hodge said in a press release. “My hope is for this sound to uplift people, help them get through whatever, and show them that I’m all in for creating music for the rest of my life and career.”
The Second is the follow-up to Hodge’s 2013 solo debut, Live Today. Writing in JT, Britt Robson said of that album, “the hypnotic morphing of textures and timbres within these liquid arrangements herald new chemistry and creative fuel.” Hodge’s other credits include groups led by trumpeter Terence Blanchard, keyboardist Robert Glasper, rapper Common and R&B singers Jill Scott and Maxwell.
Fans can pre-order The Second on CD or digital download via Amazon or iTunes.
