Come Sunday, a collaboration between bassist Charlie Haden and the late pianist Hank Jones, will be released Jan. 10 on EmArcy Records. A collection of classic spirituals, hymns and folk songs, the CD marks the follow-up to their 1995 Grammy-nominated recording Steal Away, and was the last collaboration between two longtime friends and colleagues. In a career spanning over 70 years, Hank Jones passed away in 2010 at the age of 91, shortly after completing this album.
Coinciding with the album release, Haden will receive the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on the same day, January 10.
Come Sunday was recorded at Sear Sound Studio in New York City on February 2-3 2010. The CD features several Christian hymns such as “Blessed Assurance,” “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” “Bringing In The Sheaves” as well as a couple of Christmas holiday favorites, including “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.”
