Pianist and composer Cecil Taylor was among three Americans named a Kyoto Prize laureate, it was announced today in Japan by the the Inamori Foundation. The award, similar to a Nobel Prize, is given annually to persons who have excelled in the areas of the arts, philosophy, science and technology.
The 84-year-old Taylor, who was awarded the Arts and Philosophy Prize in the field of Music, was acknowledged alongside inventor and electronics engineer Dr. Robert Dennard and Dr. Masatoshi Nei, an evolutionary biologist.
