California Town’s ‘Famous Jazz Artist Series’ Expands

Shoemake/Morgan jazz ensemble launches new monthly outing

Charlie Shoemake

The “Famous Jazz Artist Series,” in Cambria, Calif., will expand its audience to Solvang, with the first appearance set for February 18 at the Terrace Dinner Theatre. The announcement was made by Solvang businesswoman/producer Ruth Hoover and original Cambria-based series producers Charlie and Sandi Shoemake.

Alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan will be the first guest artist at the Solvang outings, joining the Shoemakes (Charlie on vibraphone and vocalist Sandi) along with Joe Bagg on piano, Tony Dumas on bass and drummer Steve Schaeffer.

Hoover established herself as a jazz entrepreneur in Los Angeles, as the owner/operator of Stevie G’s and later, of Carmelo’s Jazz Club, before relocating to the Central Coast. The Shoemakes brought their long-established recording and performing talents to the Cambria community 20 years ago and started the Famous Jazz Artist Series at the Hamlet.

The Saturday, February 18 evening event includes dinner at 6 p.m., followed by music from 7-9 p.m. Doors open at 5:30.

The Terrace Dinner Theatre is upstairs at Manny’s Restaurant, located at 1693 Mission Drive in the heart of town. Entrance is by ticket only, at $35 per person, available in advance from Manny’s Restaurant, telephone 805-691-9137.
