Boston-based pianist Al Vega, who played with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Count Basie and Duke Ellington during a 70-year career, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Dec. 2. He was 90. No cause of death was given.
Born Aram Vagramian in Worcester, Mass., Vega served as the house pianist at the Hi-Hat jazz club. The peak of his career was spanned the late 1930s-’50s, according to an obituary published by the Associated Press. The article also stated that Vega later led his own trio and played Frank Sinatra tunes on Sunday nights at Lucky’s Lounge. He also played the vibraphone and recorded under his own name and as a sideman.
