ASCAP Announces Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award Winners

21 jazz composers under the age of 30 receive cash awards

The ASCAP Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2022 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards. Now in its 10th year, the award recognizes jazz composers under the age of 30. Recipients, chosen through a juried competition process, receive a cash award of varying amounts. In addition, one recipient will be featured at the Newport Jazz Festival this summer. Judges for this competition were Chuck Owen, Fabian Almazan, and Camille Thurman. Past winners include Matthew Whitaker, Giveton Gelin, and Dave Meder. 

“We are so proud to recognize the 2022 ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award recipients and to celebrate 10 years of generous support from the Herb Alpert Foundation,” ASCAP Foundation President Paul Williams said in a press release received at JazzTimes. “These emerging voices are taking their music in creative new directions, and we deeply appreciate the Herb Alpert Foundation for helping to nurture the craft of jazz with this enduring partnership.”
