The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) has announced that its founder and artistic director, pianist Arturo O’Farrill, has been commissioned by the Apollo Theater to create a new work, The Afro Latin Jazz Suite The new composition will be premiered by the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) on May 10, 2014.
According to a press release, the commissioned piece is designed to pay tribute to his father Chico O’Farrill’s Afro Cuban Jazz Suite. The release also stated, “The ALJO concert is a component of the Apollo’s 80th anniversary season, and a part of the theater’s Lost Jazz Shrines Festival.”
