The American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers honored the winners of the 43rd Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for outstanding print, broadcast and new media coverage of music at a special ceremony and reception November 15 at ASCAP’s New York offices.
Among the jazz-related honorees:
The Timothy White Award for Outstanding Musical Biography in the pop music field recognized Will Friedwald for his book, A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers, published by Pantheon Books.
JazzTimes columnist Nat Hentoff was recognized for At the Jazz Band Ball: Sixty Years on the Jazz Scene, published by the University of California Press. Anat Cohen performed Artie Shaw’s “Nightmare” in honor of Hentoff. Many of the columns reproduced in Hentoff’s book first appeared in JazzTimes.
David Ritz won for his liner notes to Nat King Cole & Friends’ Riffin’: The Decca JATP Keynote & Mercury Recordings, released by Verve/Hip-OSelect.com/Universal Music Enterprises.
