2013 Monk Sax Competition Finalists to Perform

The BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan will present the top three winners of the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in separate performances this month and next. Each winning artist will perform with his or her own combo. The schedule is as follows:

Jan. 25-Godwin Louis (Second Runner-Up)

Alto saxophonist Louis was born in Harlem and grew up in Bridgeport, Conn., and Port au Prince, Haiti. Currently, Godwin Louis can be seen on Broadway in After Midnight.

Feb. 8-Melissa Aldana (Winner)

Melissa Aldana is a tenor saxophonist originally from Santiago, Chile. She has been a working bandleader in New York since 2009 and has released two albums on the Inner Circle label. She is the first woman to ever win an instrumental Monk competition.

Feb. 22-Tivon Pennicott (Runner-Up)

Tivon Pennicott was born in Marietta, Ga. He began studying tenor saxophone in high school, garnering recognition early on as an outstanding soloist in the Lincoln Center’s “Essentially Ellington” competition.
