Laurence Hobgood: The Spirit of Collaboration

In video interviews from the Jazz Cruise 2012, pianist talks about his early musical development, the importance of collaboration and his PoemJazz project with poet Robert Pinsky

During the 2012 Jazz Cruise, JazzTimes set up a make-shift video production studio in “The Boardroom,” a small room on the second deck of the MS Westerdam. Throughout the week, a succession of artists-including Kurt Elling, Freddy Cole, Ann Hampton-Callaway, Don Braden, Ken Peplowski, Wycliffe Gordon, Bill Charlap & Renee Rosnes and many others-came in to talk about the cruise, jazz education and their own projects. We will be posting these interviews at jazztimes.com over the next few months. You can also see more of these video interviews at the JazzTimes YouTube channel.

Pianist Laurence Hobgood has been performing and recording with Kurt Elling for over 17 years. Hobgood also has a career of his own with several recordings as a leader. In addition, he has recently collaborated with noted poet Robert Pinsky in a recording called POEMJAZZ (Circumstantial Productions), which they will premiere at the Reggatabar in Cambridge, Mass on February 24, 2012.
