Joey DeFrancesco: Playing By Ear and Heart

Video interview from The Jazz Cruise 2013

During the 2013 Jazz Cruise, JazzTimes set up a make-shift video production studio in one of the cabins on the MS Westerdam. Throughout the week, a succession of artists—including Karrin Allyson, Julian Lage, Sean Jones, Terell Stafford, New York Voices, John Clayton and many others—came in to talk about the cruise, jazz education and their own projects. You can see more of these video interviews at the JazzTimes YouTube channel.

In this set of video interviews from The Jazz Cruise 2013, organist Joey DeFrancesco talks about his early musical education-including his first instrument, his first paid gig, and his formal and informal music education. DeFrancesco, who was on the Jazz Cruise performing with his trio, shared his thoughts on working with his band. He also discussed his current and future projects, as well as his own trumpet playing and singing.
