JazzTimes is honored to premiere the sixth episode of Sanborn Sessions, the digital music show from multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist David Sanborn, sponsored by pro audio retailer Sweetwater. In this episode, the finale of the show’s first season, Sanborn welcomes keyboardist, composer, and longtime collaborator Bob James.
This time around, the band is pared down to a basic quartet: just Sanborn on alto, James on acoustic piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Clarence Penn on drums. During the conversation interludes, instead of talking about his music or career, James focuses on the performance of others, particularly Williams, with whom he was playing for the first time at this session. (The authoritative Williams solo that James is referring to starts at 4:17 in the video.)
Filmed in Sanborn’s New York home studio, Sanborn Sessions explores the essence of music through candid conversations and free-flowing performances. The show’s first five episodes featured Kandace Springs, Michael McDonald with Brian Owens, Jonatha Brooke with Charlie Hunter, Terrace Martin, and Cyrille Aimée. Episodes can be viewed at sanbornsessions.com, as well as on the Sanborn Sessions YouTube channel.
